There are great people, and then there are Great People

God's way is not the only way. A saying in my native Yoruba language is roughly translated: Many paths lead to the marketplace. Any reasonable person will tell you that there are many ways to achieve any given aim. Now, depending on the value that we attach to our object of pursuit and the consequences that follow our choices. several options attract us in our life journey.

What I am saying today is that there are many ways to be great; defined as rich, successful and relevant to humanity. God spoke to David in the Bible using the following words:

II Samuel 7 verse 9
And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.

The phrase that attracts my attention is "I.....have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth."! God does not deny that there are "self-made men" out there. Men who "pulled themselves up by the bootstraps". Men who made something out of their lives, went in search of their dreams and made them happen. God sees and knows those men, but he is silent about who was responsible for their success. As it were, he is saying to David: There are great men out there with big names and I am making you a great name like theirs. David will not be inferior to any hero who ever walked the earth. The difference however is that David will be a God-made hero. And there friends, is where all the difference lies.

The name that God makes is never forgotten in the rubble of the earth. It lives forever. In a later passage, God immortalizes the dynasty of David, provided David's descendants walk true to the Name. David recounts:

I Kings 2 verse 4
If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’

We know that this is what happened because Jesus, the resurrected Lord who lives forever and sits on the Throne of Israel, is referred to in Scripture as the Son of David. The name that God makes is not just for the earth, but for eternity.

Dear friend, the fame, wealth and success that you seek, be sure that it is God-made, not self-achieved. Be blessed today.
